Roadkill Cabbage

Picture if you can, driving down a beautiful picturesque country road in upstate New York with green hills and orange-tinted sky. All of a sudden you see what appears to be a volleyball-like object rolling towards you. At first you think, What is that? Then you shudder, thinking Dear God, is it somebody’s head? Or worse, is it a brain of some animal, rolling down the road?
My friend pulled off the side of the road, got out of his car and slowly walked over to this thing that had finally come to rest in the grass. He squinted his eyes, trying to focus on this grotesque object. What on earth could it be? As he approached and could see more clearly, he laughed out loud when he realized it was a huge head of cabbage! A perfect prize-winning kohlrabi-like gourmet cabbage, not at all damaged by the bumpy journey it had just taken. The cabbage had apparently fallen off the back of a produce truck making its way on the curvy country road! Proud of his “kill,” my friend grabbed the cabbage, took it home to his wife and later told me that it was one of the best-tasting cabbages they had ever eaten! They made coleslaw, steamed cabbage, cabbage rolls—you name it! I think they ate off of it for over a week. As I interviewed my friend, he was quick to say, “Oh, it was like a gift from God when I realized it was a prize-winning New York, farm-grown head of cabbage rolling right towards me! Talk about provision!” Wow.

How many times have we been certain that what we see is really what we think it is? Better yet, how many of us have immediately jumped to the wrong conclusion before we get all the facts?
Here’s a great verse to meditate on this week:
“For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Romans 1:20, NIV).
Clearly seen, understood, and no excuse here! I laughed at my friend’s reaction to seeing the cabbage rollin’ down the street. I also thought later, if he had run over it, would that be called “summer squash”?

Well Road kill cabbage is all the rage. Driving down a peaceful motorway near Porirua City I spied three green spheres and lo-behold, yes. Three beautiful cabbages. Ripe for the picking and being spied on by two of the biggest brown rabbits I have seen. But I was quicker than the rabbits, and we have been feasting on cabbage roadkill.

The roads are paved with cabbages...

I think we should explore the flavour enhancing effect of extreme centripetal force when applied to cabbages.
